Brendan Eich was born on July 4, 1961. He attended Santa Clara University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Math and Computer Science. He received his master's degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He created JavaScript as a Netscape employee in the mid-1990s. JavaScript is now one of the most popular programming languages. In 2022, 98% of websites have used JavaScript. The first version was created in just 10 days and was integrated into Netscape Navigator. This was a breakthrough for Netscape as the employees were worried that it would not be used anymore due to the rising popularity of Microsoft. However, Netscape ended up shutting down. Brandon Eich cofounded Mozilla in 1998 and became its CEO in 2014. However, he stepped down after just 11 days due to undisclosed reasons. He is now the CEO of Brave Software, which is an open-source web browser. Surprisingly, he only won one award during his career: the ECMA Fellow Award.
Guido van Rossum, a Dutch computer programmer, was born on January 31, 1956, in the Netherlands. He attended Stedelijk Gymnasium Haarlem, a prestigious high school. He went on to the University of Amsterdam where he achieved a master's degree in Math and Computer Science. He moved to America and began working at various places including the CW as a programmer, worked on the ABC programming language, at the Amoeba distributed operating system, at a non-profit research lab (CNRI), at Google as a Senior Staff Engineer, at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, at Dropbox as a Principal Engineer, and recently joined the Developer Division at Microsoft. During his work, he began a side project of creating a new programming language. He named this language Python after the T.V. show Monty Python's Flying Circus. Python is very widely used today. It is used for operating systems, programming games/apps, data science, etc. He also achieved many awards such as a bronze medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad, the Free Software Award for Advancement of Free Software, was recognized as a Distinguished Engineer by ACM, was given the title of BDFL (Benevolent Dictator for Life) for Python, the NLUUG Award, was recognized as a Fellow of the Computer History Museum and achieved the title of Dijkstra Fellow by CWl. By creating Python and advancing other programming languages, Guido van Rossum has contributed greatly to the field of computer science and continues to do so.
